is a tri-city celebration of spatial design featuring professionals from Tokyo, Seoul and Hong Kong. East Gathering 2012 will take place between 22-24 November, 2012. The 3-day event consists of seminar, exhibition and student design camp.
East Gathering 2012 is organized by the Hong Kong Interior Design Association (HKIDA), and co-presented with the Japanese Society of Commercial Designers (JCD) and the Korean Society of Interior Architects/Designers (KOSID).
“Finding the New in the Old”
Featuring award-winning interior designers from Tokyo, Seoul and Hong Kong, this inspiring seminar centres on the topic of “Finding the New in the Old”. Using examples from their own practice, speakers discuss ways in which they incorporate traditional elements from their own cultures into new creations.
Makoto Tanijiri was born in 1974. In 2000 he started Suppose Design Office, an architectural design firm in Hiroshima. His work covers a broad range of areas including designing houses, business spaces, site frameworks, landscapes, products, and art installations. For the projects, he collaborated with structural engineers such as Ono Japan and Nawaken Jimu. In 2008, he started a second office in Tokyo, and since the time, he has been promoting many projects both in Japan and overseas. He is currently completed an installation project of TOSHIBA LED light at Milano Salone 2010. He has received a lot of achievements such as the JCD Rookie Award, the Heiwa-ohashi Pedestrian Bridge Design Proposal Competition as a finalist. He is also a part time professor of Anabuki Design College.

Suppose Design Office
Akihito Fumita was born in Osaka, and graduated from the Osaka University of Arts. He joined Ric Design Inc in 1985, and established Fumita Design Office in 1995. He has received many awards for his projects including Tokyo Space Awards, Display Design Award, Good Design Award and the JCD Design Awards.

Mr. Iijima graduated from Musashino Art University in 1973, and established his own design firm in 1985. His services are highly sought after all over Asia and in the United States, and he has recently completed many major projects in Tokyo, Seoul and New York. A book of major works by Mr. Iijima, entitled 《casuistica》, was published in May, 2010.

Yoon studied at the Graduate School of Design at Konkuk University, where he obtained a Master’s degree. He is currently the director of TTAE Co. Ltd., where his designs garnered many awards including the Grand Prix of the Korea Interior Design Competition, Excellence Award from the Korean Society of Interior Architects (KOSID) Design Competition and the Myeong-ga Myeong-in Award in Interior Design. In addition to his design work, he is also the director of KOSID.

Jun Bum-Jin graduated from Konkuk University with a Master’s degree in interior design. He worked at various design firms before becoming the director of studio VASE. Jun had won a number of prestigious design awards including Maru Design Awards 2007, Korea Design Awards 2011 and the Korea Interior Design Best Awards 2011. He also teaches at various institutions including Konkuk University and Dongguk University.

Michael Tsang is the director of AGC Design Ltd. With over 40 years of experience in the industry, Tsang has designed many award winning projects that include residential, retail, hospitality, educational, entertainment and museum spaces.

Mr. Patrick Leung was born in 1956, and graduated in 1978 at the Design Department of Hong Kong Polytechnic University with distinction. Mr. Leung became a member of Chartered Society of Designers in England in 1979. That same year, he joined Alan Gilbert & Associate as Designer, was promoted Senior Designer in 1981 and became Senior Associate in 1984. He played important role on several prestige large-scale projects, including many 5-star hotels in Mainland China, Asia and Middle East. Throughout his distinguished career, he has won numerous awards including China Top Ten Grand Designer Award, The World’s Leading Interior Designers of Andrew Martin International Interior Design Awards, Interior Design Media Prize – Annual Grand Designer and Hong Kong Ten Outstanding Designers Award.

This exhibition features award-winning interior designs from Hong Kong, Tokyo and Seoul that
demonstrate how designers from these regions create modern designs that stay true to their cultural heritage.
Student Design Camp
“Finding the New in the Old in Hong Kong”
Interior design students from various institutions of higher study in Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea will collaborate on a creative project on the theme of “Finding the New in the Old in Hong Kong” under the tutelage of industry professionals from Tokyo, Seoul and Hong Kong.
East Gathering also included casual events, such as a city tour of some revitalized historical buildings like the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), Lui Seng Chun and the Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre. In addition, the 3-day event provided many opportunities for casual get-togethers that allowed participants from Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea to share their views and network in relaxed settings.
